TIP #27: Out With Those Nasty Toxins!!

Tip #27:  Out With the Nasty Toxins!

Have you ever really enjoyed yourself on vacation and come back home feeling sluggish, bloated and down?  Have you ever noticed that your skin has lost its glow and appears dull and saggy?  Well, these symptoms are many times due to toxin overload in the body and especially the liver (the skin’s main telling organ).

We are exposed to toxins everyday!  Toxins are rampant in our food, the air we breathe, the chemicals we put on our skin daily, etc.  This is why I feel it is VERY important to detox your system on a regular basis!

The four main ways the body detoxes are found in the word P.U.R.E.

P is for Perspiration

U is for Urination

R is for Respiration

E is for Elimination

I like using methods of detox that follow this acronym and that are easy to use so that I stick with them.  Some of the detox tricks that I use regularly are as follows:

    1. Drinking LOTS of water daily to flush the system.  I squeeze a lemon into the water in the mornings for extra detox!  (Urination)

    2. Walking daily outside (briskly) for 30-45 minutes to really sweat out those toxins! (Perspiration and Respiration)

    3. Eating lots of fiber daily (such as avocados) and drinking my daily GREEN drink for regularity. (Elimination) Click here to find a delicious Green Drink!

    4. Using my InfraRed SAUNA Blanket weekly for one hour to really detox and rev up the metabolism to maintain my weight.  (Perspiration)

    1. I take a good Probiotic daily to maintain good digestion and immunity. (Elimination)

After doing these simple detox tricks using PURE, I find that my skin glows, my weight stays even and I just feel better inside!  I hope you can use these tricks to really make a difference in your overall health and skin beauty!

Have you ever wondered what COLLAGEN is and why there is so much talk about it in skincare?

Well, without getting too technical, collagen is a protein which is formed by amino acids.  As I have mentioned before, more collagen is what we ALL want as we age.  Collagen provides the support for the skin and keeps the wrinkles away and keeps the skin firm!

We had plenty of collagen when we were young, but as we get older, collagen formation definitely slows down.  And, when collagen slows down, wrinkles occur, skin sagginess happens and our skin tone loses its brightness!

That’s where the importance of PEPTIDES comes in!  Peptides are pre-cursers to the proteins of collagen and play an important part in the foundation of collagen formation.

There are many types of peptides, but two that I really love for my skin are called Matrixyl 3000 (which is actually two peptides called palmitoyl tetrapeptide and palmitoyl oligopeptide) and Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide).  A wonderful serum that I use has BOTH of these peptides and Vitamin C (which is an excellent antioxident for the skin).  It is made by Asterwood Naturals

Matrixyl 3000 is known to help the skin form new collagen by tricking the skin into thinking that there is a breakdown of collagen, which in turn creates new collagen synthesis.

Argireline is sometimes referred to as "nature’s botox".  It works by relaxing facial muscles, which in turn relaxes the skin and wrinkles.

I LOVE this serum, and I use it morning and night.  A really effective trick I found is to MIX the peptide serum in my hand with a few drops of the EMU oil (See Tip # 18).  Since the Emu Oil acts as a trans-dermal carrier, it helps to take the peptide serum down to the dermal layer where collagen is formed.  This mixture makes it SUPER effective in fighting wrinkles and firming the skin!

Did you know that the average woman applies over 10 products daily to her skin and hair?  Did you know that she also exposes her body to between 126 and 200 CHEMICALS to her skin daily?  Many of these chemicals are harmful toxins and hormone disruptors that penetrate the body’s largest organ (your skin) and enter the bloodstream and body!

Many of the chemicals in skin and hair products are known to cause allergies, eczema, skin rashes and diseases, hormone disruptions and even worse CANCER!  I myself lost my thyroid gland to a very serious disease, and I do believe that the chemicals I was using had a big part in my disease.

After completing my studies in Natural Skin Care, I realized that this topic is VERY important to me, especially since I have two baby grand-daughters that are precious to me!  I don’t want anything harming them, much less items that can be avoided!

The information can be overwhelming, so one of the best things that you can do for your family is to visit the Environmental Working Group’s website called SKIN DEEP: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/top-tips-for-safer-products/

On this website, their experts and scientists work hard to rate and test products and ingredients for their safety profile for us consumers.  They also have an APP called HEALTHY LIVING (EWG) that you can download to your phone that allows you to scan beauty products from the store to see their safety.

Among some of the toxins and hormone disruptors that are regularly used in beauty products that should be AVOIDED are the following:

  • Parabens (Propyl, Methyl, Isopropyl, Butyl, Isobutyl) - Linked to hormone disruptions, like early puberty in young girls and thyroid problems.
  • Fragrances - Cause Allergies/Skin irritations and Hormone disruptions
  • Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Releasers: Strong evidence of CANCER (Formaldehyde is commonly used in hair chemical straighteners, nail polishes, eyelash glue, makeup,  etc.)
  • Hydroquinone: Used in skin lighteners and linked to skin diseases.
  • Vitamin A (Retinyl or Retinol):  Avoid these especially in sunscreens and day lotions as they can actually spur on skin cancer.

There are many more VERY harmful chemicals and toxins so I encourage EACH of you to enter your skin care items and ingredients into the SKIN DEEP website or app to find out what you and your family are using!

Now, the good news is that there are LOTS of HEALTHY alternatives in skin and hair care.  I have found that these products are actually better for the skin and do more for ANTI-AGING.  Healthy products are more effective on wrinkles, skin dryness, hair shininess, etc.!

Some of my HEALTHY favorites are:

  • Oils, such as EMU, Avocado, Argan, Jojoba, Coconut, Castor, Olive
  • Butters, such as Shea, Coconut
  • Aloe Vera
  • Natural Clays
  • Chamomile
  • Safe sunscreens that use: Zinc Oxide
  • Items with the USDA ORGANIC  green label are also highly rated with over 95% organic ingredients (But, DON'T be mislead by skincare companies that use the words organic and natural.  This may just mean that only a small part of the product is safe.  I have researched many "all-natural" products that still have dangerous chemicals in them.)

I urge each of you to do your research on your products especially the products used on the little ones!   You can easily do this as your current product runs out and you are repurchasing.  Just make the switch to a healthier alternative!

I feel this topic is SO incredibly important that you may contact me on my website with any questions, and I will try to help you with any product you may wish to change.

It is really important to stay HEALTHY while looking BEAUTIFUL :)

Ladies (and Men, of course)! Are you tired of beauty products and treatments that promise results and leave you disappointed? Or how about those expensive spa treatments that may help temporarily, but cost a fortune?

Well, today I'm sharing one of my FAVORITE anti-aging home devices that is absolutely fabulous and it works!! It's called Red Light Therapy, and I use it nearly everyday for about 15 minutes per day.

Red Light Therapy was discovered by NASA Astronauts many years ago to help them grow plants in space. They also found that it helped them with pain relief and to heal injuries while in space.

Today, many dermatology offices and spas use red light to help their acne patients or patients looking for wrinkle reduction. In fact, my son's dermatologist did a few treatments on him for his teenage acne a few years ago. The problem with the professional treatments are the cost and time commitment of going to their offices frequently.

Well, now you don't have to look further than your own "At Home" Red Light device!

Red light therapy does SO many things! It penetrates down to the dermis to stimulate collagen, which in turn reduces wrinkles and firms the skin. The healing lights reduce redness and blemishes. Continued use is cumulative and refines skin tone issues. It even helps with soft tissue injuries. I am currently using it on my shoulder for a ligament injury.

Red Light Therapy is THAT amazing!!!

Some last tips about its use are as follows:

1. Use on a clean face and neck so that the lights can penetrate thoroughly.

2. Wear small goggles or keep eyes closed during treatment.

3. Let red light rest lightly on your skin or as close as possible for best results. Any slight pink/reddish skin after the treatment will go away quickly. This is only due to the enhanced circulation.

4. Use an effective serum immediately afterwards since the red light will help the serum penetrate even further into the dermis. These are the two I use.....

5. Try to use at least 5 days per week for ten minutes on each area until results are achieved. Then, 2-3 times per week to keep wrinkles away!

6. Lie down and relax and meditate or listen to some nice music while doing the treatment and ENJOY!

My sister and I have been using our at home unit for over a year and have seen a great improvement in our skin! My hubby even uses it! He says the treatment is extremely relaxing, too :)

TIP#18: I Love Those Big Birds!

One of the things I dislike most about winter is the cold dry air. When the humidity drops, I tend to notice a definite dryness to my skin that is due to the winter air.  That is why I am so excited to share a new discovery that I am using this winter (and actually I am using Emu Oil Year-Round now) that really combats my dryness!

It is called EMU OIL and as the name implies, it comes from the EMU bird, which is closely related to the ostrich.  I came across this wonderful oil during my research.

I started using the oil on top of my night creams and serums before bedtime, and I really noticed a soft moisturized complexion in the morning. I love that it is very inexpensive, and I decided to research a little more about why the EMU oil is so fantastic for the skin and this what I learned:

1.  Emu Oil has been used for thousands of years by the Aborigines people of Australia to combat skin issues of the dry desert climate.

2. Emu Oil has high levels of Essential Fatty Acids, such as Linoleic Acid, which are very healing to the skin.  It is anti-inflammatory and aids with a wide variety of skin disorders, such as Eczema.

3.  It fights aging and wrinkles in three ways.  First, it is extremely moisturizing and keeps the skin supple when applied. Secondly, it fights aging because it has trans-dermal qualities. This means that it is able to penetrate to the deep layer of the dermis where collagen and elastin are found.  Even more exciting is the fact that if it is put on top of creams and serums, it helps to push those ingredients down to the dermis where real changes can happen in the skin.  Finally, it has been proven to help thicken the skin when used regularly (aging skin is thin skin)!

4.  It can be used in the hair as a softening and smoothing agent.

5.  It is great for rubbing into sore muscles and arthritic joints to relieve pain.

6.  It helps with acne, scars, stretch marks, burns and scrapes!

I am in love with Emu Oil, and love the fact that it is considered VERY safe to use by the Skin Deep website!  After using the Emu Oil for over a year now, I have really noticed great things happen to my skin, such as less fine lines and better texture!

TIP #16: Drink it by the Liter!

This week my daughter told me that she had already lost over 24 pounds since giving birth to my grand-baby last week.  She said she was drinking a ton of water and that was really helping her!

Something as simple as "drinking water" doesn't phase most of us.  We are all fortunate enough to have plenty of drinking water and it is easy to take for granted.  But, the gift of WATER benefits so much of our lives!

I was just recently watching a You-Tube video on skin care and the topic was Drinking Water.  The model said that she attributes much of her flawless skin to drinking over a Liter of water right when she gets up in the morning! Then, she continues to drink lots throughout the day.

I always try to drink water throughout the day, but now I am really trying to monitor the amount, especially in the morning.

Approximately 2/3 of the human body is water and 90% of the brain is comprised of water.  The skin is largely supported by water and this is why being dehydrated will age a person by creating dry, wrinkled skin.  I have noticed increased moisture in my skin since increasing my water intake.  This is especially important to me now during the winter when I tend to dry out more with the low humidity(water) in the air.

The success of weight loss or management also largely depends on water intake.  Water helps a person feel full so that they don't eat as much.  It also revs up the metabolism which is critical for weight management!

A tip for drinking more water is to set a timer for a glass every hour, or keep a glass near you to remind you to drink up!

TIP #13: Indulge in the Alligator Pear :)

When my grand-baby was around 4 months old, she started eating solid foods.  I knew that my daughter only wanted to feed her whole natural fruits and veggies (not processed food from baby jars).  So when she stayed with us, I had to find the perfect food to feed her.  That's when I fed her the AVOCADO (or the "Alligator Pear" as some refer to it).

The avocado represented the "perfect" 1st food for my grand-baby.  It is a SUPER-FOOD with over 20 vitamins and minerals in each avocado.  It has an abundant amount of healthy fats known as monounsaturated fats that help the developing brain (and us "old" brains, too :)

The avocado is easily digested and has a whopping 10-15 grams of fiber in each one!   Because of the high fiber content, it helps stave off diabetes because it digests slowly and reduces blood sugar spikes.  Additionally, because of the amount of fiber and healthy fat, avocados help you feel full longer which helps to maintain a healthy weight.

I make sure to eat at least one avocado daily because one of the most fabulous benefits about avocados is that they contain a good amount of Carotenoids which help with eye health. Maintaining healthy eyes is very important to me as I have suffered from eye problems due to some thyroid issues I have struggled with.

Another very healthy benefit of avocados is that the type of fat that they have in them helps the body absorb other nutrients that are fat soluble. For instance, adding avocado to a salad helps your body absorb more of the nutrients from the other veggies!

As for skin health and beauty, the avocado has large amounts of Antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, and E!  You can even make a nourishing face mask with an avocado to apply topically to the skin.  I find that the OIL is so wonderful that I add the oil to my hair when I am shampooing for added shine.

Added to all of that, avocados fight cancer, Alzheimer's, heart disease and high blood pressure (they even have more potassium than bananas)!

My husband and I are delighted our grand-babies love the avocado and we try to feed them one every time they visit.

TIP #12: I am Coco for Coconuts!

I wanted to expand on my last article which discussed baking with coconut flour.  Coconuts deserve a whole article to be written about them because they have tremendous health and beauty benefits!  They are truly a WONDER food, and I love foods that serve multiple purposes!

The most important benefit that we found when we starting eating and cooking with coconut oil was the good energy that it provides. We like to add a couple of teaspoons to our protein shakes or just cook and bake with the organic/unrefined variety.  Coconuts are a form of saturated fat (Medium Chain Fatty Acids) that the body uses very efficiently.  This type of fat is HEALTHY for your body, and it does NOT make you fat!  It actually has been shown to help people lose weight because it speeds up the metabolism and helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.

Aside from ingesting coconut oil, I found that the oil has many beauty benefits.  Coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral.  It keeps your skin glowing when it is in your diet and can be used in many of your face and body creams or products.  One of my favorite moisturizers is by Eminence Organics called "Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer" and can be found at this link.

Another fantastic use of coconut oil is for the hair.  It can be used in place of expensive hair serums or gels.  It adds shine to hair and really tames and moisturizes dry fizzy hair!  I have a jar of coconut oil in my bathroom closet that I rub directly on my hair after washing as I am blow drying. If you do try it on your hair, just be sure to use very little so that it doesn't leave your hair too greasy.  You can always add more, if needed. Another tip is to apply a good amount to your hair for a couple of hours (with a plastic cap over your head) followed by your regular hair-washing.  It really adds moisture and shine!

You can even shave with it or find a body cream that is made with coconuts for after shaving.  I use it to remove my eye makeup and that saves money!!!  We also put a couple of tablespoons in our daily green drinks for fantastic energy!

TIP #20: My New Favorite Little Animal

TIP #20: My New Favorite Little Animal

Have you ever wondered what many beautiful Korean and Asian women do to have such beautiful skin?  Well, one of our little garden friends is to thank for one of their beauty tricks!  The Snail is my new best friend and might just be yours too!  The beauty part is actually the Snail Mucin/Extract (known as Snail Filtrate).  The Snail Filtrate is purified and packed with beauty nutrients, such as Hyaluronic Acid and Peptides.  The Snail extract can really help with collagen formation to reduce wrinkles and firm the skin!  I found a wonderful product while I was vacationing in Florida, and it has really helped with my fine lines from the Florida sun.  I just LOVE it!!!

The product that I use is called Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence.  I use this Facial Serum morning and night under my sunscreen during the day or my emu oil at night.  The best part is that the ingredients are mostly organic and safe to use!

The snails are so popular in Asian countries that women even go to Snail Spas where live snails crawl on their faces!  I think I will just stick with my serum, thank you :)

Tip #6. One Of My Favorite Anti-Oxidants

Tip #6. One Of My Favorite Anti-Oxidants

One of my favorite antioxidants is called Astaxanthin. It provides superior skin anti-aging benefits, along with skin protection from the sun. After taking the supplement for awhile, it provides me with a natural looking tan from within. It helps keep the skin smooth, supple and wrinkle-free. My sister even noticed those benefits when she started taking it.

Astaxanthin comes from micro algae, and it is the substance that gives salmon and shrimp the pink/coral color.

It's antioxidant capability is over 500 times more potent than Vitamin E and over 6000 times more potent than Vitamin C. As you know, antioxidants are the fighters of free radical damage in the body that can cause cancer and other diseases. It also works by reducing inflammation in the body, which also fights disease.

I usually take one 10mg daily of the Nutrition Champion Astaxanthin brand that can be found at this link.
